With spring right around the corner, it is time to set up your spring vaccination appointments!

If you have showing or travel deadlines, we highly recommend getting on the schedule ASAP.

What do we recommend? Below are general guidelines for the most common spring vaccination visits.

Boarding / Show Horse Spring Vaccine Recommendations
(at farms vaccinating 8 or more horses)

Appointment #1: Rabies, Flu/Rhino, Coggins, Fecal
Appointment #2: Strangles
Appointment #3: EWT/WN, Potomac*
There should be at least 3 weeks in between appointments to reduce the risk of adverse reactions.
If 8 or more horses are vaccinated at the same farm and appointment, there is no farm call fee.

Boarding / Show Horse Spring Vaccine Recommendations
(at farms vaccinating 1 to 7 horses)

Appointment #1: Rabies, Flu/Rhino, Coggins, Fecal
Appointment #2: EWT/WN, Strangles, Potomac*
There should be at least 3 weeks in between appointments to reduce the risk of adverse reactions.
If 1 to 7 horses are vaccinated at the same farm and appointment, the farm call will be divided by the number of horse owners.

Backyard / No Travel Spring Vaccine Recommendations
Appointment #1: Rabies, EWT/WN, Coggins, Fecal
For backyard or no travel horses we recommend making your appointment for sometime after May 1st. Exceptions: If your horse has been vaccinated before May 1st in past years, or if you plan on doing fall EWT/WN booster vaccinations.

Fall Appointments 2016

What we recommend this fall:

Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) Vaccination: We highly recommend Flu/Rhino boosters for horses at all boarding facilities, horses that are exposed to new horses (frequently and infrequently), and horses that are still showing and traveling.

West Nile Virus (WNV) & Encephalitis (EEE) Vaccination: We highly recommend EWT/West Nile boosters for horses that received their spring EWT/WN vaccination before May 1st. If your horse received EWT/WN after May 1st, you are still welcome to re-vaccinate this fall, especially if you are in an area with higher mosquito populations.

Fall Fecal Testing: We also recommend testing fecals in October and November for your horse. You are welcome to drop samples off at the office (please call first), or give them to Kendyl at your fall vaccine appointments. When collecting samples: 1) we need FRESH samples, 2) we only need 2-3 fecal balls, and 3) place samples in a zip-lock bag with your name and horse name on the bag.

Microchips: Need a microchip to meet the new USEF microchip requirements for all hunter/jumper, jumper, and equitation divisions at USEF recognized shows? We have them in stock!

If you are not sure what your animals are due for, feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help you!

Contact us at 508-923-3422 to schedule your appointments today!

p.s. Keep in mind we will be offering our Winter Dentistry Discount again this year! Get 20% off all dentistry services performed between November 1, 2016 and February 28, 2017.

**HEALTH ALERT**

We would like to inform our clients that EHV-1 has been confirmed in multiple horses on one farm in Middleboro, MA. A strict quarantine is in place and all proper safety precautions are being taken. The farm is cooperating fully with all recommended biosecurity measures. More details will be released as they become available.

Please watch the video below, by Dr. Nicola Pusterla of UC Davis, for an excellent review of Equine Herpesvirus.

An FAQ by the American Association of Equine Practitioners can also be found on this page: http://www.aaep.org/info/horse-health?publication=753

Feel free to contact us with any questions - I will do my best to address any concerns you all may have!

What the heck?!?! The urine spots in the paddock are red!

1/27/2016

This time of the year we get a bunch of calls from concerned clients about the color of their horse’s urine in the snow.  In almost all cases this is NORMAL. When horse urine is exposed to oxygen and light it causes a chemical reaction changing the color from clearish/yellowish (when expelled) to an orangish/reddish/brownish (on the ground after it is exposed to the air and light for a bit of time).  This actually happens all year long, but the white palate of the snow just makes it stand out like a sore thumb.

When it becomes a concern?  If the urine coming directly out of your horse is abnormally colored or your horse is straining to urinate contact your vet right away! This can be a sign of internal bleeding, muscle damage, urinary tract infections, stones, toxicity to something it ingested (ie: red maple poisoning), etc.

Obviously if you have any concerns or questions, give us a call!
