Dr Foristall is highly recommending Flu/Rhino boosters this fall/winter. Boosters will provide protection against equine influenza virus (EIV) and the respiratory forms of equine herpesvirus (EHV 1/4). Zoetis, our vaccine maker, and the AAEP, both recommend boostering at 6 months if you are higher risk - so if you are at a boarding facility, or attending shows/clinics, or using a commercial shipper, or at a farm that takes in training horses regularly, or at a farm that brings in new horses and sells horses regularly, then boosters are highly recommended.

]]><![CDATA[Mosquito alert August 2024]]>Thu, 08 Aug 2024 14:59:05 GMThttp://www.highlandhillvet.com/blog/mosquito-alert-august-2024*If your horse has not been vaccinated for EWT/WN (eastern/western equine encephalitis, tetanus, west nile) at all this year or is overdue you should get an appointment with your vet asap!
*This year Dr Kendyl is recommending that horses receive an EWT/WNV  booster if they were vaccinated this spring before May 1, 2024. If your horse was vaccinated for EWT/WN after May 1, 2024, a booster is not necessary but clients are welcome to booster if they would like.  The vaccine is very safe and can be given at 3-6 month intervals.  
*Please note that the “Core” vaccine we administer to most horses seen by us at Highland Hill includes rabies and EWT/WNV (eastern/western equine encephalitis, tetanus, west nile).
*The AAEP recommends boostering for EWT/WN annually unless your horse is in a high risk area. (www.aaep.org)

We would like to welcome Dr Laura Parisio-Wood to Highland Hill Veterinary Service! Dr Laura started working for us part-time in September. She is a fabulous equine veterinarian with plenty of experience and our clients and patients love her. While she enjoys all aspects of general equine practice, her specialties include: dentistry, podiatry and sport-horse medicine, and chiropractic work. WELCOME! 

Here is some information about her:
Dr. Laura Parisio-Wood grew up in the Hudson Valley Region of New York State. She completed a bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in Equine Studies from Alfred University in NY, before crossing the pond to receive her veterinary degree from the Royal Veterinary College, in London, England. Upon graduation, she moved back to the Northeast, where she participated in internship programs at Rhinebeck Equine and The New Jersey Equine Clinic in central NJ. Dr.
Parisio truly enjoys all aspects of general equine practice. She has developed a strong interest in dentistry, podiatry and sport horse medicine, particularly rehabilitation. In 2018, she became certified in Equine Veterinary Medical Manipulation (the veterinary equivalent to chiropractic therapy) through the Integrative Veterinary Medical Institute near Ocala FL.  Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Parisio enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling, cooking and being outdoors.

I am excited to announce some changes to our emergency services!

As much as I love my job, my clients, and my patients, I need some time to take care of myself and my family. I have been on call 24/7 for the last 11 years - during holidays, birthdays, blizzards, family events and everything else in between - and I need to take a break.  

I have joined forces with a handful of local veterinarians and will be doing a weekend on-call rotation with them. We still have some details to fine tune but this will allow each of us to have some much needed time off.

This rotation will start this weekend on March 5th. Our emergency line will be updated with the on-call veterinarian’s information. If I am not on call I will not be available via text, phone, email, or facebook. I have full confidence in the veterinarians that I will be working with and ask that you do too.

On a more serious note: 

Covid-19 is on our minds.

At the time being we are doing business as usual. We are taking extra precautions though: extra hand washing, wearing personal protective equipment, disinfecting the truck and equipment more often, changing clothes more often during the day, and social distancing from clients as best as possible. 

We ask our clients to please reschedule your appointments if: you have recently traveled, are feeling ill, have interacted with someone that has recently traveled or is feeling ill, or if you are a caretaker or interacting with someone that is immunocompromised  or elderly on a regular basis. We also ask that the number of clients at each appointment remain at a minimum. For example if we are vaccinating a farm of 25 horses - all 25 horse owners do not need to be at the appointment - just the farm manager being present is enough to assist Dr Kendyl. Kendyl is also happy to follow-up with horse owners via phone or email to discuss any findings or concerns found at appointments further.
